Case Study: Mara (vestibular schwannoma)

Mara was diagnosed with a small benign tumor in her inner ear on the left side. She had mild symptoms of tinnitus on that side that hardly bothered her. She could hear well and did not experience much vertigo or dizziness. Her ENT surgeon suggested that she monitor her vestibular schwannoma over the next twelve months, as there was no urgency or harm in leaving it as is.

Mara had review MRI scans that year, and indeed her vestibular schwannoma had made subtle changes and slight growth. Despite the fact that she had almost no symptoms, they decided there was less risk in removing a small tumor than in waiting to see if it would grow. The surgeon booked her in for surgery, and she had the tumor removed successfully. Following surgery she noted increased tinnitus and vertigo with sudden head movements. Her inner ear on that side now had sustained slight damage from surgery. She had a unilateral vestibular injury that resulted in vertigo and imbalance. Mara began a daily neuroplasticity practice so that her balance function could return to normal. She practiced vestibular exercises and emotional soothing tools daily until she felt normal again. Her tinnitus disappeared and she had no further regrowth of the vestibular schwannoma. Mara recovered her balance, got her normal life back, and attended reviews as needed with her surgeon.
